5th Graders Show Service and Stewardship

Our class showed our character quality of Service and Stewardship in two ways this month.

1).  Students created Christmas cards to send to militatry men and women.  What a great way to spread holiday cheer to those keeping us safe here at home!

2.)  Students are participating in Macy's "A Million Reasons to Believe."  For every letter written to Santa and dropped off at participating Macy's stores in their mailbox to go to the North Pole, $1 will be donated to the "Make a Wish Foundation."  I will be dropping the letters off personally for all the students after they are written in class over the next 3 days.

Great work Mrs. Lancaster's class!  So proud of you!

9/11/12

Remember this day 11 years ago?   I know I do and I'm so THANKFUL for our brave heroes that day! I also respect and honor those who lost their lives during this terrible tragedy.  Today, we had a discussion and watched a BrainPop video on 9/11.  We also wrote an acrostic for heroes today, which will be a published book.  Ask your student what they learned.  Tell them what you remember about this day, now over a decade ago.

In learning news:
We started our astronomy unit today.  Ask your student about rotation and revolution!
Writing: Autobiography vs. Biography?

Assigned work:
20 minutes reading (don't forget to sign those logs!)  (I'm also way over my allotted 20 minutes for the day, hence the late post!)

Lunar Eclipse Revealed!

Ok so after some searching, I found some help! We don't experience a lunar eclipse every time we have a full moon because:

1. There is a 5 degree tilt to the angle in which the moon revolves around the sun (which we discussed in class) therefore "the Moon spends most of the time either above or below the plane of Earth's orbit.". (look at picture in book page 23 bottom right hand corner).

2. "...the plane of Earth's orbit around the Sun is important because Earth's shadows lie exactly in the same plane. During Full Moon, our natural satellite (the moon) usually passes above or below Earth's shadows and misses them entirely. No eclipse takes place. But two to four times each year, the Moon passes through some portion of the Earth's penumbral or umbral shadows" and we see an eclipse.

Want more info? http://www.mreclipse.com/Special/LEprimer.html

Want to know when the next lunar eclipse is? Not until June 4! And we will only see a partial lunar eclipse here in the USA! Look at NASA's website for more info!
