What does "effort" look like in the classroom?

This was our morning discussion today.  All of the ideas are from the students, they know what it means to put in the effort at school!

What effort does NOT look like in the classroom:
Head down
Playing with “stuff”
Sitting, looking at your paper, not doing anything,
Not participating
Daydreaming
Staring out the window
Putting yourself down
Giving up
Talking to your neighbor
Not listening
Tipping in your chair
Negative talk
Not staying focused on school work
Raising your hand when you don’t have an answer
Peanut gallery
*Not using common sense

What DOES effort look like:
Paying attention and focusing on teacher or student talking/sharing
Not giving up
Doing your work when assigned with the time given
Putting faith in yourself that you can complete your work (on time!)
*Pushing yourself towards your goals
Following classroom rules
Having a positive attitude
“Home Court!”
Self control
When someone’s still working, you can cheer them on!
Keep those pencil’s movin’ non-stop!

9/18 Sunday Night

Have you packed your backpack yet?
A good routine is to pack up the night before.  This eliminates last minute, "Where's my IR book?" and signing planners as students are dropped off. :-)  Plus, it helps students focus on being responsible for their belongings and prepares them for the next day of learning.

Make sure to bring back signed Purple Homework Trackers.  If you had missing homework, make sure it is completed.  It will be docked 10% but if its turned in Tuesday or later (and it must be turned in), it will be a 0 in the gradebook.

Students should be reading about 40 minutes each weekend.
MAP testing begins this week!

Looking forward to another fun week of learning!

If you have missing work from last week, such as the back sheet of the Parent Packet signed and returned and a picture of Everyday Math, please do so for tomorrow.

Parents: I do not sign planners on Friday since I sign the homework sheets.  I do see planners filled out but with the end of the day Friday Free Recess, its too hectic to make sure to sign all students.  Thank you for understanding! :-)

Also: My email has changed!   lancasters@ccabr.org

Please take some time today to remember and share 9/11 with your students.  We will be discussing the topic tomorrow in class.  We are very thankful and proud of the lives lost this day 10 years ago.

Welcome Back!

Welcome to the new 5th graders of 2011-2012!

I hope all of you have had a wonderful summer and I cannot wait to see all of you!  We are going to have a great year and become a team of learners together!  I know there are a lot of changes to go back to school: getting up early, going back to homework, and remembering to say Mrs. Lancaster and not Miss LaLonde! :-)  Its ok, I'll be doing the same things as YOU!

Can you name all the books you've read this summer?  See if you can have a list ready for the first day of school!

Looking forward to seeing all of you soon!
