5th Graders Show Service and Stewardship
Our class showed our character quality of Service and Stewardship in two ways this month.
1). Students created Christmas cards to send to militatry men and women. What a great way to spread holiday cheer to those keeping us safe here at home!
2.) Students are participating in Macy's "A Million Reasons to Believe." For every letter written to Santa and dropped off at participating Macy's stores in their mailbox to go to the North Pole, $1 will be donated to the "Make a Wish Foundation." I will be dropping the letters off personally for all the students after they are written in class over the next 3 days.
Great work Mrs. Lancaster's class! So proud of you!

Belated Monday Post
Sorry for not posting yesterday, I was having issues with my internet connection yesterday, BUT it's back today.
FYI:
Students learned a NEW study skill for spelling yesterday: FLASHLIGHT SPELLING!
Go into a dark room (or you can even leave the lights on!) and use a flashlight to spell your spelling words (see this week's planner for the list). You need to spell each word 3 times each and spell outloud as you "write" your words using the beam from the flashlight! Happy Spelling!

First day of October has come to a close. Pay attention to the moon at night (unless it's cloudy!) because we are tracking the phases of the moon daily for the month of October! We learned about solar and lunar eclipses today, ask your student which one they could look at and which one is dangerous to look at!
Spelling: Spelling binder words to learn this week is the priority. There will not be a spelling list in students' planners...we need to work on these growing words to learn lists first!
*Use snap and clap or the 3 S's tonight!
Science: Review moon phases and eclipses
TEST over all astronomy learned up to today (both quizzes and eclipses) will be THURSDAY! Oct. 4
Reading: finish reading Chap. 6 of Mixed Up Files and finish quiz for Chap. 5 and 6 (you can use your book) #2, 4, 7, and 9 as well as one question of your choice.

Remember this day 11 years ago? I know I do and I'm so THANKFUL for our brave heroes that day! I also respect and honor those who lost their lives during this terrible tragedy. Today, we had a discussion and watched a BrainPop video on 9/11. We also wrote an acrostic for heroes today, which will be a published book. Ask your student what they learned. Tell them what you remember about this day, now over a decade ago.
In learning news:
We started our astronomy unit today. Ask your student about rotation and revolution!
Writing: Autobiography vs. Biography?
Assigned work:
20 minutes reading (don't forget to sign those logs!) (I'm also way over my allotted 20 minutes for the day, hence the late post!)

Lunar Eclipse Revealed!
Ok so after some searching, I found some help! We don't experience a lunar eclipse every time we have a full moon because:
1. There is a 5 degree tilt to the angle in which the moon revolves around the sun (which we discussed in class) therefore "the Moon spends most of the time either above or below the plane of Earth's orbit.". (look at picture in book page 23 bottom right hand corner).
2. "...the plane of Earth's orbit around the Sun is important because Earth's shadows lie exactly in the same plane. During Full Moon, our natural satellite (the moon) usually passes above or below Earth's shadows and misses them entirely. No eclipse takes place. But two to four times each year, the Moon passes through some portion of the Earth's penumbral or umbral shadows" and we see an eclipse.
Want more info? http://www.mreclipse.com/Special/LEprimer.html
Want to know when the next lunar eclipse is? Not until June 4! And we will only see a partial lunar eclipse here in the USA! Look at NASA's website for more info!
